|President Abraham Lincoln and family resided seasonally on the grounds of the Soldiers' Home to escape the heat and political pressure of downtown Washington, as did President James Buchanan (1857–1861) before him. President Lincoln's Cottage also served as the Summer White House for Presidents Rutherford B. Hayes (1877–1881) and Chester A. Arthur (1881–1885).|

Coolest Day of the Year
Today was the coldest day of the winter so far. With the wind chill it was 3 degrees. We left at 11:00 today and didn't get back until 9:30. We had a fun filled day. We went to the Lincoln Cottage for a tour. I took my good camera but they wouldn't let us take pictures inside and it was to cold to be out very long.
We hurried from there and went to a temple session for the senior missionaries in our mission. We met in the chapel and had a special meeting with the temple president. We went on a session and they met after the session for cookies and milk. We were starved and we went out for a nice dinner at Outback. It has been a long time since we have had a steak. We made a quick stop at WalMart we were so surprised how quiet it was there. The roads were not bad either. I think people wanted to go home and be warm. It was sooooo cold. It was such a nice session. In the prayer circle there was a special prayer given that angels would accompany us as we left the temple. There was a special prayer offered for our families. This has been such a busy day but a special day.
